Ella Marie Defreitas: Leading Through Wellbeing

Meet Ella

Ella Marie Defreitas is the founder of EMD Life Coaching, a speaker, consultant, and creator of The CALM Method™. Based in London, she brings more than twenty-three years of experience in local government, where she has worked alongside children, young people, families, and professionals. Alongside her management role within the local authority, she has developed EMD Life Coaching, supporting professional women and organisations to build healthier ways of working through nervous system wellbeing, psychological safety, and compassionate leadership.

A Different Way of Measuring Success

There are people whose careers are defined by titles, promotions, and milestones. Then there are people like Ella Marie Defreitas, whose journey has always been shaped by a quieter question: How can life become better for the people around her?

For more than two decades, she has answered that question through public service. Working with children, families, communities, and professionals, she has gradually taken on greater leadership responsibility while remaining deeply connected to the people and teams she serves.

That purpose continues to guide her today.

Her work with EMD Life Coaching exists alongside her local-authority career rather than replacing it. She continues to work within the local authority in a management role, where wellbeing is not simply something she teaches externally. It is something she actively considers within her own team and workplace.

This combination of professional experience and coaching work gives her perspective a distinctive grounding. She understands the pressures of organisational life because she continues to experience them herself. She understands leadership not only through theory, but through the everyday responsibility of supporting people, making decisions, managing demands, and creating an environment where others can thrive.

Through EMD Life Coaching, she now extends that same commitment to professional women and organisations, helping them recognise that wellbeing is not something to consider only after exhaustion arrives. It deserves attention from the very beginning because healthy people create healthier workplaces, healthier families, and healthier communities.

Learning From the People Behind the Work

Ella’s career began on the frontline of local government, where she worked closely with children, young people, and families navigating difficult circumstances. Every conversation reminded her that meaningful change often starts with being willing to listen.

Over time, her commitment and experience led her into management and leadership, where she found herself looking at the wider picture rather than individual situations alone.

As her responsibilities grew, she noticed something that stayed with her.

The people delivering support were often carrying invisible burdens of their own. Dedicated professionals showed extraordinary compassion for others while quietly managing stress, emotional fatigue, and relentless pressure. Their commitment rarely faltered, but the cost of that commitment was often hidden beneath professionalism and resilience.

That observation continues to influence the way Ella approaches leadership today.

Within her own management role, she recognises the importance of supporting the wellbeing of the people she leads. Her experience has shown her that workplace wellbeing cannot simply exist as a policy or an occasional initiative. It has to be reflected in everyday leadership, communication, relationships, and the environments leaders create for their teams.

At the same time, life outside work was evolving. Becoming a mother gave her a completely different understanding of responsibility, priorities, and balance. Like many working mothers, she experienced the daily challenge of trying to meet professional expectations while remaining fully present for her family.

Those experiences gradually reshaped the way she viewed leadership. Achievement no longer meant simply accomplishing more. It meant creating a life that could be sustained without sacrificing wellbeing.

EMD Life Coaching emerged naturally from these years of observation, professional experience, personal reflection, and lived learning. Rather than representing a departure from her established career, it became another expression of the same purpose that had guided her throughout her work: helping people live and work in healthier ways.

Seeing Strength Through a Different Lens

Leadership often teaches people how to solve problems for others. For Ella, it also revealed how often capable women quietly carry more than anyone realises.

She met women who looked confident, successful, and dependable. Yet behind that image, many were emotionally exhausted. They continued giving their energy to families, workplaces, and communities while rarely giving themselves permission to pause.

Instead of viewing these women as people who needed fixing, she saw something very different. She recognised that they simply needed support that acknowledged their humanity.

As she reflects:

“I don’t think women need fixing. I think they need the right support and the right tools.”

That perspective became the foundation of her coaching philosophy.

Rather than encouraging people to ignore stress or simply become more productive, she focuses on helping them understand their nervous systems, recognise their own needs, and develop practical strategies that support lasting wellbeing.

This shift also required her to examine her own habits.

For years, she believed strength meant continuing regardless of how tired she felt. Like many women balancing leadership, motherhood, professional responsibilities, and personal ambition, she convinced herself that pushing through was simply part of being successful.

Eventually, she realised that constantly overriding physical and emotional signals was not resilience. It was unsustainable.

Learning about nervous system regulation transformed not only the way she supported clients but also the way she approached her own life. She openly acknowledges that her own learning continues, something that makes her work feel deeply authentic rather than instructional.

She understands the journey because she is walking it herself.

Building Something Rooted in Compassion

Building EMD Life Coaching alongside an established career has required courage, discipline, and a clear sense of purpose.

Ella has not stepped away from her local-authority management role. Instead, she continues to work within local government while developing EMD Life Coaching alongside it. The two areas of her professional life complement one another, giving her the opportunity to apply what she learns in one environment to the other.

Her experience as a manager gives her a direct understanding of the realities organisations and their people face. At the same time, her coaching work allows her to explore wellbeing, nervous system regulation, psychological safety, and compassionate leadership in greater depth.

She also brings these principles into the way she supports her own team.

For Ella, wellbeing is not simply something reserved for coaching sessions, workshops, or keynote talks. It is part of how she believes people should be treated every day. Supporting a team means recognising that people have lives beyond their job titles, that capacity can change, and that good leadership requires attention to the human being behind the role.

Today, through EMD Life Coaching, she develops workshops, programmes, keynote talks, and coaching experiences centred on nervous system wellbeing, workforce sustainability, psychological safety, and inclusive leadership.

Her work serves both professional women and organisations because she believes individual wellbeing and organisational culture cannot be separated. When people feel psychologically safe, valued, and supported, they contribute more creatively, communicate more openly, and build healthier relationships inside and outside work.

Every workshop and conversation is designed to leave people with practical tools they can immediately use in everyday life. Rather than offering complicated theories, she focuses on realistic approaches that help people understand themselves more deeply and respond differently to stress.

She measures success through moments that cannot always be captured in statistics.

Sometimes it is seeing someone recognise they are not alone.

Sometimes it is hearing a participant describe feeling understood for the first time in years.

Sometimes it is watching an organisation begin to rethink what genuine wellbeing looks like beyond policies and initiatives.

Those moments remind her why this work matters.

Leadership That Begins With Humanity

Ella believes leadership is not defined by authority but by the environment people create around them.

Integrity, kindness, compassion, and authenticity are not simply words she associates with leadership. They are principles she actively practises every day, both through her local-authority management role and through EMD Life Coaching.

She wants the person someone meets over coffee to be exactly the same person they encounter on stage speaking to an audience.

That consistency creates trust, and trust creates the conditions where meaningful conversations become possible.

She also believes balance deserves a more compassionate definition.

Rather than expecting every day to feel perfectly organised, she accepts that life moves through different seasons. Family responsibilities change. Professional demands evolve. Personal capacity rises and falls.

Instead of striving for perfection, she chooses awareness.

Her faith, her family, and regular moments of self-reflection help her remain connected to the reasons she began this work in the first place.

She understands that caring for others starts with recognising when she also needs care.

This mindset allows her to lead with empathy instead of exhaustion.

Creating a Future Where Wellbeing Belongs Everywhere

Ella is intentionally building EMD Life Coaching at a pace that reflects her values.

She is not interested in rapid growth for its own sake. She wants every programme, workshop, collaboration, and speaking opportunity to contribute meaningfully to people’s lives while continuing to honour the professional responsibilities she already holds.

Her current focus includes expanding education around nervous system wellbeing while working with organisations that want healthier workplace cultures and more sustainable leadership practices.

Her ongoing experience within local government continues to inform this work. Being both a manager within an organisation and the founder of a wellbeing-focused coaching practice gives her a valuable perspective on the connection between individual wellbeing and organisational culture.

Looking further ahead, she hopes conversations about wellbeing become part of everyday leadership rather than occasional responses to crisis.

She believes organisations perform better when people feel safe enough to think clearly, communicate honestly, and bring their whole selves to work.

Ultimately, her vision reaches beyond workplaces.

She hopes healthier leaders will create healthier teams, healthier families, and stronger communities because positive change rarely stops with one individual.

As she says:

“Success isn’t about trying to keep up with everyone else. It’s about building something that’s true to who you are.”

That philosophy shapes every decision she makes as she continues developing EMD Life Coaching while remaining committed to her work within local government.

Choosing Presence Over Perfection

Looking back across Ella Marie Defreitas’s journey, there is a clear thread connecting every chapter. Whether she was supporting families, managing teams, raising a family, or building EMD Life Coaching alongside her established career, she has remained committed to helping people experience lives that feel healthier, more balanced, and more meaningful.

Her story is not about leaving one career behind to begin another. It is about expanding a lifelong commitment to people.

Her work across local government, management, and coaching reflects the same underlying belief: that people deserve to be supported not only when they are struggling, but throughout the everyday experiences of work and life.

She reminds us that leadership begins with humanity, wellbeing is not a reward for working harder, and lasting success is measured not only by what we achieve but also by how we feel while achieving it.

By encouraging others to grow at their own pace, care for themselves with the same compassion they offer everyone else, and build lives aligned with their values, she is quietly reshaping what modern leadership can look like.

Her story is a reminder that sustainable success does not always require choosing between purpose and wellbeing, career and personal life, or leadership and self-care.

Sometimes, it means finding a way for them to exist side by side.
