Charmaine Reid is a UK based leadership development coach and the founder of Fawkes Coaching & Consulting Ltd. With more than two decades of experience in highly regulated industries, she now works with professionals navigating leadership, change, and career growth. Her work focuses on helping people build confidence, trust themselves, and lead with greater clarity and authenticity.

There is a calm honesty in the way Charmaine Reid speaks about leadership. She does not describe it as authority, status, or power. For her, leadership begins much deeper than that. It begins with self trust. With learning how to remain grounded during uncertainty. With understanding your own voice before trying to influence others.

Much of that understanding came from living through change herself. Long before she became a coach, before she worked at executive level, and before she began helping professionals navigate complex careers, she was simply a mother trying to create a safer future for her son. She arrived in the United Kingdom from South Africa in 2001 carrying three suitcases, a five year old child, and the quiet fear that none of her previous experience would matter anymore.

That period of her life still shapes the way she works today. She understands what it feels like to doubt yourself while continuing to move forward anyway. She understands how courage often looks very ordinary from the outside. Sometimes it is simply continuing to take the next step when there is no certainty waiting ahead.

Before moving to the UK, Charmaine had already built an impressive foundation in South Africa. She began her career in the toy industry in an entry level sales role and quickly progressed to Regional Sales Manager within three years, leading a team of eleven people. Even then, leadership came naturally to her. She enjoyed helping people grow, supporting teams, and creating environments where others felt capable.

Still, migration has a way of unsettling even the strongest sense of identity. When she arrived in the UK, she carried what she describes as “a bag of bias.” She convinced herself that her South African experience would not be viewed as valuable. After one unsuccessful interview, she accepted an entry level role in the pharmaceutical industry, believing she needed to start over from scratch.

What followed over the next twenty years would slowly challenge that belief.

Working across Drug Safety, Quality, and Regulatory operations, Charmaine steadily grew into senior leadership roles. She led projects, integrations, and international teams inside highly regulated environments where precision and accountability mattered deeply. Yet what stayed with her most was never the title itself. It was always the people.

That courage became a recurring theme throughout her life. Again and again, she found herself stepping into unfamiliar situations with limited knowledge, learning through experience while discovering new layers of resilience within herself. Each challenge became evidence that she was more capable than she had once believed.

Over time, she realised she had never truly been starting from zero at all.

Throughout her corporate career, people consistently sought Charmaine out for support, perspective, and guidance. Whether formally managing teams or informally mentoring colleagues, she became someone others trusted during periods of uncertainty and transition.

Still, it took years before she fully recognised that coaching was not simply something she did naturally. It was the work she felt most connected to.

In 2020, another significant life transition emerged when she relocated to Switzerland for work. There, she helped establish a Regional Centre for Research and Development for her organisation. Professionally, it was an important chapter. Personally, it became transformative in an entirely different way.

While living in Switzerland, Charmaine connected online with a coach who happened to come from her hometown in South Africa. She enrolled in the coaching programme and found herself reflecting deeply on the thread that had quietly connected every stage of her career.

She realised that no matter the industry, project, or leadership role, the work that gave her the greatest sense of meaning was always the same. Helping people recognise their own capability.

That insight changed the direction of her life. When her role in Switzerland came to an end, she decided to formally train as a coach, combining her degree in Leadership and Management, her years of executive experience, and her coaching qualifications into a new path forward.

Today, through her company, she helps professionals in highly regulated industries become confident, self led leaders. Much of her work focuses on individuals navigating leadership transitions, growing responsibilities, and environments where technical expertise alone is no longer enough.

Some of the most defining chapters of Charmaine’s life unfolded far away from boardrooms and leadership programmes.

At one point, she faced two deeply painful experiences within six weeks of each other. She made the difficult decision to divorce her husband while also learning that her mother had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Those experiences forced her inward.

Like many people accustomed to carrying responsibility for others, Charmaine had spent years demanding constant strength from herself. Pushing through. Managing. Continuing. But grief and emotional exhaustion eventually make it impossible to ignore the need for compassion.

She began leaning more intentionally on counselling, support from family and friends, and her own personal coaching journey. More importantly, she started learning how to offer herself the same understanding she so naturally extended to others.

That shift became one of the most important lessons of her life.

Before then, success had often meant endurance. Afterwards, it became something gentler and far more sustainable. She learned to recognise her own limits without shame. To understand that rest was not weakness. To allow herself moments of vulnerability without feeling that she had failed.

She speaks openly about learning to honour the natural ebb and flow of life.

There are days, she says, when she allows herself to “hide under the duvet,” and other days when she consciously chooses to “step into the shoes” and move forward again. That balance changed the way she sees both leadership and humanity itself.

Rather than teaching people to become fearless, she teaches them to become honest with themselves.

Her coaching is rooted not in perfection, but in self awareness.

What makes Charmaine’s work resonate so deeply with the professionals she coaches is that she understands the environments they are working within. Having spent more than twenty years in highly regulated and technically demanding industries, she knows the pressure many professionals carry every day.

These are environments where people are expected to communicate with precision, navigate complexity, influence stakeholders, and make difficult decisions under scrutiny. Technical expertise is often high, but confidence can quietly erode beneath constant pressure and responsibility.

Charmaine helps people reconnect with themselves underneath all of that.

Through coaching, workshops, leadership development programmes, DiSC facilitation, and cultural awareness training, she creates spaces where professionals can build confidence without needing to perform a version of leadership that feels unnatural to them.

Her work is especially focused on helping individuals strengthen communication, navigate ambiguity, and develop the internal trust needed to lead effectively.

At the centre of her philosophy is a belief that leadership is not something external people eventually hand to you. It is something developed internally through courage, self reflection, and consistency.

That belief extends beyond her paid work as well. Alongside her coaching practice, Charmaine volunteers with the mentoring organisation Thrive with Mentoring, supporting women through mentoring, confidence building, and career development initiatives.

For her, the most meaningful achievements are not titles or milestones. They are the people she has watched grow over time.

Former team members and coaching clients have gone on to become senior leaders themselves, creating positive ripple effects inside their own organisations and communities. Seeing that continued impact brings her the greatest sense of fulfilment.

Success, in her eyes, is deeply personal.

It is watching someone who once doubted themselves begin to trust their own voice. It is seeing people lead with their values instead of fear. It is witnessing individuals step into opportunities they once believed were beyond them.

There is something refreshingly grounded about the way Charmaine speaks about ambition and growth. She does not frame leadership as constant achievement or relentless productivity. Instead, she returns repeatedly to ideas like authenticity, courage, kindness, wisdom, and self belief.

She says she feels like she is only just getting started.

Looking ahead, Charmaine hopes to continue expanding the impact of her work across organisations and leadership teams, particularly within highly regulated industries where communication, trust, and confidence are essential.

She wants to help more professionals move beyond self doubt and into leadership that feels aligned with who they truly are. Not polished versions of leadership built on performance, but grounded leadership built on clarity, courage, and self awareness.

At the same time, she hopes to keep evolving personally through continued learning, new experiences, and meaningful conversations with people whose stories challenge and inspire her.

The future she imagines is not driven by scale or recognition alone. It is driven by contribution. By helping people discover that they already hold much of the strength they are searching for externally.

That idea continues to guide everything she does.
