Meet El Wong
El Wong is a Canadian AI educator, trainer, and business coach who helps professionals adopt artificial intelligence in practical and accessible ways. After spending more than twenty five years in corporate leadership and learning development, she founded Superpowers With AI to make emerging technology less intimidating and more inclusive, particularly for women and communities that have historically been left out of the conversation.
Finding Purpose Beyond the Corporate World
Some career changes begin with a carefully crafted plan. Others emerge from uncertainty, disappointment, and an unexpected willingness to start over. El Wong’s journey belongs firmly in the second category.
For more than two decades she built her expertise inside the corporate world, developing experience in leadership, financial services, inclusion, and learning and development. The work gave her valuable skills and a deep understanding of how adults learn, but eventually she felt called to create something of her own.
Leaving a stable career after twenty five years required courage. It also required accepting that success would not arrive overnight. What followed was a period of experimentation, adaptation, and persistence that ultimately reshaped both her career and her sense of purpose.
Rather than simply teaching technology, El found herself asking a much deeper question. Who gets left behind when the world changes, and what can be done to make sure they are included?
A Pivot That Changed Everything
When El launched her coaching business, she expected to build on her experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Yet market conditions shifted rapidly as organizations reduced their emphasis on those initiatives. The market moved in another direction. Rather than force a model the moment no longer rewarded, she adapted, sharpened her focus and followed where demand was growing. Reading the market and moving with it became a signature of how she builds.
Instead of viewing the setback as failure, she treated it as information. The willingness to pivot became one of the defining characteristics of her entrepreneurial journey.
Her curiosity about artificial intelligence began almost accidentally after hiring someone to assist with lead generation who relied heavily on AI tools. Rather than outsourcing that knowledge, she decided to understand it herself.
She recalls,
“I thought to myself I do not need a tech bro telling me how to do this.”
That single moment sparked an intense period of self directed learning. She immersed herself in the rapidly evolving world of AI, studying the tools deeply enough not only to use them but eventually to teach others. Her background in learning and development made the transition feel natural. She understood that technology alone was never the point. Helping people gain confidence and practical skills was.
What began as curiosity evolved into a calling.
Building Credibility One Day at a Time
Starting an AI focused business without a technical background created its own internal obstacles. El understood the material, but she still wrestled with the feeling that she needed to know more before she could confidently stand in front of others.
Over time she realized that waiting for complete mastery was impossible because the field itself never stops changing. Instead she chose a clear focus and committed herself to serving beginners who needed guidance more than perfection.
Growing the business required consistency long before it produced visible results. She posted educational content on social media almost every day despite slow engagement and uncertain returns. Months passed before one video gained widespread attention. After another quiet period, a second breakthrough arrived.
Those experiences reinforced an important lesson. Sustainable credibility is rarely built through a single viral moment. It develops through repeated effort, thoughtful communication, and showing up even when no immediate reward appears.
El understands that expertise is strengthened by practice. Every workshop delivered, every piece of content shared, and every coaching session refined her ability to communicate complicated ideas in simple language.
Challenging Stereotypes Through Action
The technology sector has often been associated with narrow stereotypes about who belongs and who possesses authority. El’s presence challenges those assumptions.
As a non technical Gen X woman of colour, she has chosen not to wait for permission or validation before contributing to the field. Instead she has built expertise through disciplined learning and practical application while remaining committed to making technology approachable for others.
She explains,
“Being a non technical Gen X woman of colour, I am driven to defy the odds and stereotypes.”
That motivation extends beyond personal achievement. For El, every workshop represents an opportunity to encourage someone who may believe technology is inaccessible or reserved for specialists. She understands that many professionals hesitate to engage with AI because they fear they lack the right background or technical skills.
Her own story quietly disproves that belief.
Making AI Feel Human
The conversations surrounding artificial intelligence often focus on automation, efficiency, or disruption. El approaches the subject from a different angle.
She believes AI should reduce overwhelm rather than create it. Her training emphasizes practical application without unnecessary jargon, helping professionals understand how these tools fit naturally into work they already perform.
Many of her clients discover they can save substantial amounts of time each week while improving confidence and creativity. Yet productivity is only one measure of success. Equally important is the reduction of anxiety that often accompanies unfamiliar technology.
Her educational philosophy reflects years spent understanding how adults absorb new information. Rather than overwhelming participants with endless possibilities, she helps them identify relevant use cases and build confidence through manageable steps.
This practical mindset allows people to adopt innovation without feeling pressured to become software engineers or data scientists.
Inclusion as a Responsibility
One of the strongest themes running through El’s work is the belief that access matters.
Artificial intelligence will shape hiring, communication, education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and countless other aspects of daily life. If marginalized communities are excluded from understanding these tools, existing inequalities may deepen.
El views that possibility as both a challenge and a responsibility.
Her original goal of teaching AI to one million women and underrepresented individuals was surpassed in just fourteen months. Rather than treating that milestone as the finish line, she expanded the vision to 12,345,678 people.
This ambition is less about numbers than about creating opportunity. Knowledge empowers individuals to participate in technological change instead of being passive observers of it.
By making AI education beginner friendly and culturally accessible, she hopes to reduce barriers that have historically limited participation in emerging industries.
Persistence Over Perfection
Entrepreneurship often rewards visible success while concealing the quieter discipline required to sustain it. El openly acknowledges that consistency played a larger role than luck.
The months spent creating content before gaining traction taught patience. The decision to continue despite uncertainty strengthened resilience. Each repetition refined both her message and her confidence.
She also learned the value of narrowing her focus. The rapid pace of AI development can easily create fear of missing out, with endless new announcements competing for attention.
Choosing a specific lane allowed her to ignore distractions and deepen expertise where it mattered most to her audience.
This approach reflects a broader philosophy that meaningful progress often depends less on chasing every opportunity and more on committing to the right one.
Curiosity as a Leadership Practice
When confronted with challenges, El does not immediately seek harder work or longer hours. Instead she intentionally redirects her attention.
Exploring unrelated subjects, engaging curiosity, and allowing her perspective to shift often creates unexpected solutions. Combined with regular exercise and a clear sense of purpose, this practice helps her maintain energy during demanding periods.
She recognizes that leadership requires mental flexibility as much as determination.
By stepping away from immediate obstacles, she often returns with clearer thinking and renewed creativity. That willingness to pause and reframe problems has become one of her most valuable professional habits.
Looking Toward a Larger Mission
The next chapter of El’s work extends beyond individual workshops and coaching sessions. She envisions multiplying impact through an AI Literacy Train the Trainer program designed for nonprofit organizations.
Instead of teaching only direct participants, she wants to equip community leaders to become educators themselves. This approach would allow AI literacy to spread more rapidly while respecting local languages, cultures, and community needs.
The model reflects her belief that education becomes more powerful when shared through trusted local relationships.
As technology continues evolving, decentralizing knowledge may prove one of the most effective ways to ensure equitable access.
A Quiet Confidence in Betting on Yourself
At the heart of El Wong’s story is not technology but belief. It is the belief that careers can evolve, that unexpected pivots can reveal deeper purpose, and that expertise can be earned through commitment rather than conventional credentials.
She encourages others to build a personal brand and trust themselves even when certainty feels distant. Her own experience demonstrates that reinvention remains possible regardless of age or background.
The corporate chapter of her life provided valuable foundations, but it did not define her future. By embracing curiosity and refusing to let stereotypes dictate her path, she created space for a mission that extends well beyond business success.
Today her work is helping shape a future where more people feel invited into conversations about artificial intelligence instead of excluded from them. In doing so, she reminds us that innovation becomes most meaningful when it expands opportunity rather than limiting it.
The story of El Wong ultimately is not about machines or software. It is about people choosing to learn, adapt, and share knowledge with generosity. It is about creating confidence where uncertainty once existed and proving that it is never too late to begin again.
