Roots in the Natural World
Alex’s earliest memories are of a farm in the English countryside. Surrounded by animals and wide open spaces, he learned firsthand how life cycles, resources, and growth interconnect. These formative experiences instilled a deep respect for the natural world and a conviction that humanity needs a new model of growth.
“Nature shaped my way of thinking about sustainability long before I had a professional title. Growing up on a farm, everything has its rhythm, and it became clear that how we live and build must align with that,”
School provided the basics, but the real lessons were outside in the fields. Alex watched cycles of growth and renewal and sensed early on that the way society measures success often clashes with environmental realities. That awareness quietly laid the foundation for a career dedicated to aligning business with sustainability.
Finding His Professional Rhythm
Alex’s early career was a balancing act between conviction and opportunity. He began as a sustainability and environmental champion, determined to integrate ecological concerns into the corporate world. His path took him to a small consultancy focused on sustainable development, which was later acquired by a global real estate company, JLL. He became a senior director, but the traditional corporate structures and compliance-driven approaches did not satisfy him. He realized that he wanted more than ticking boxes.
His curiosity and desire for creative solutions led him to explore multiple roles simultaneously. At Nuveen, he advised on sustainability part-time while also consulting for CleanTech startups. He returned to JLL to continue his work but eventually created a new role focused on innovation. This path evolved into digital transformation advisory, applying technology and data to support sustainable outcomes. Each pivot, though challenging, was guided by a single principle: work must have purpose and impact beyond formality.
Alex’s career has never been linear. He moved between roles, industries, and even business models, driven by the search for meaningful work. He embraced risk, knowing that each change brought both excitement and uncertainty. Even as a father of two, leaving stable corporate roles was daunting. He describes the experience as mentally taxing, yet invigorating.
The Courage to Pivot
For Alex, professional growth has always been intertwined with personal growth. Early on, he had to build resilience in the face of skepticism. In the early 2000s, sustainability was not a mainstream concern for businesses. Alex recounts how he had to “grow a thick skin, take rejection, and hone the value proposition.”
Over time, these experiences sharpened both his resolve and his ability to create meaningful influence.
His interest in PropTech in 2015 marked another pivotal moment. He embraced innovation and digital tools, helping organizations digitize workflows and enhance operational efficiency. Yet he noticed that technology alone could not replace purpose. It was a means, not the end. He returned to sustainability as his primary focus, combining lessons from innovation, technology, and digital transformation to craft a unique approach to impact.
Edds Associates and the Power of Connection
Today, Alex leads Edds Associates, an advisory firm working with real estate and technology companies to embed sustainability into their core strategies. His approach is highly personal and relational, built on trust and loyalty. He thrives on connecting people, spotting innovative solutions, and ensuring the right expertise reaches the right hands.
“Most of my career, I could count the carbon or sustainability impact of my work. Now, influence and connections matter more. That’s why I launched the podcast. It is about connecting people and educating them,”
Through his podcast, The Future We Build, he engages industry leaders, innovators, and creative minds. The conversations explore how to leverage emerging technologies, data, and AI to create a more sustainable and equitable built environment. The podcast has become a platform for knowledge exchange, mentorship, and inspiration, reflecting Alex’s belief in the power of collaboration.
Alex emphasizes that his work is not just professional it is deeply personal. His children influence his definition of success, reminding him that sustainability is ultimately about the world they will inherit. Material gains are secondary to the knowledge, courage, and values he hopes to instill in them.
Balancing Ambition with Life
Running his own advisory firm and podcast while raising a family presents its challenges. The transition from corporate security to entrepreneurship has been a test of resilience. Alex describes the mental load candidly, noting the need to motivate himself daily and manage uncertainty. Fitness routines and quality time with his children are vital anchors in his life, sustaining both energy and focus.
His network and experience allow him to support others in their sustainability and innovation journeys. Although he considers himself a “wannabe entrepreneur” in some respects, Alex channels lessons from his own pivots to guide emerging leaders and startups. His work is a combination of personal vision, professional expertise, and a dedication to fostering a community of creative problem-solvers.
Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Alex hopes to grow his podcast into a key voice for sustainable and innovative real estate. He wants to continue collaborating with visionary individuals, exploring how AI and digital tools can amplify positive impact. Every initiative he undertakes is rooted in curiosity, adaptability, and the desire to push boundaries thoughtfully.
Alex believes that true innovation comes from following one’s path rather than the herd. He has consistently chosen curiosity over convention and encourages others to do the same. This approach has allowed him to blend sustainability, technology, and influence into a coherent vision, demonstrating that meaningful work requires both courage and reflection.
Reflections on Purpose and Growth
Alex’s story is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and intentionality. He has navigated multiple industries, embraced risk, and continuously reinvented his professional self without losing sight of his core values. Success, for Alex, is no longer measured solely in corporate milestones or financial gain. It is about creating a meaningful legacy for his children, connecting brilliant minds, and shaping a more sustainable future.
Through his advisory work and podcast, he continues to explore what it means to lead with purpose in an ever-changing world. Alex’s journey demonstrates that the combination of curiosity, courage, and connection can drive not only personal fulfillment but also lasting impact in the broader community.
